DIRECT CREMATION IN LOS ANGELES:

WHAT IT COSTS AND WHAT'S INCLUDED

When families reach out about direct cremation, the first thing most people say is some version of the same thing: "I just want to understand what we're actually paying for." That's exactly the right question. And it deserves a straight answer.

At Walter's Funeral Services, we believe you deserve to know exactly what's included before you commit to anything. This guide gives you everything: what direct cremation is, what our $1,450 package includes down to the last detail, how to arrange it from home, and what happens every step of the way.

What Is Direct Cremation?

Direct cremation is the simplest form of cremation available. There is no formal viewing or visitation before the cremation takes place. Your loved one is cared for and cremated with full individual dignity, and the cremated remains are returned to your family.

Families choose direct cremation for many reasons, it is the most affordable option, it allows flexibility for a separate memorial at any time and place, it can be arranged entirely from home, and it offers privacy for families who prefer to move quietly. Choosing direct cremation does not mean choosing a lesser farewell. It means choosing the form of care that is right for your family.

What's Included in Walter's $1,450 Direct Cremation Package

Our direct cremation package is $1,450. All-inclusive. Here is exactly what that means:

  • Pickup of your loved one: from home, hospital, care facility, or coroner's office, within a 20-mile radius of our Glendale office ($3 per mile beyond 20 miles)
  • Climate-controlled storage: your loved one is kept in refrigerated care until cremation takes place
  • Alternative container: required for the cremation process, included at no extra cost
  • Cremation: performed individually, with full dignity and chain-of-custody throughout (additional fees may apply for individuals over 250 lbs)
  • Temporary urn: for the return of cremated remains to your family
  • One certified death certificate: required for most legal and financial processes
  • All legal paperwork and filing: we handle every required form with the State of California on your behalf
  • Department of Consumer Affairs fee: included

Important to know: Individuals over 200 lbs may incur an additional charge. Pickup beyond 20 miles from our Glendale office is $3 per additional mile. Additional certified death certificates are available at cost. Our team will always give you a complete, honest price before confirming any arrangement.

Can You Still Have a Memorial Service with Direct Cremation?

Yes, absolutely. Direct cremation and a meaningful memorial are not mutually exclusive. Many families choose direct cremation and then hold a celebration of life, a graveside gathering, a religious ceremony, or a private family gathering at any time, in any location that feels meaningful. This flexibility allows out-of-town family to travel, gives the family time to grieve first and plan second, and places the memorial exactly where it belongs, centered on honoring the person, not dictated by logistics.
